Gardeners can be extremely dedicated enthusiasts when it comes to producing the best quality plants, fruit and vegetables and using the best quality top soil. Top soil is rarely overlooked considering all the time that is spent on other areas of garden improvement – in this respect, many gardeners are really amazing people. Of all the activities that people in the UK get up to, gardening is high up in the list of popularity. Of course there is one thing that makes gardening less pleasurable – the price.

Gardening costs can be kept to a minimum however, especially when finding ways to improve top soil. There is little point therefore in spending great amounts of money when some simple cost saving top soil improving tips will do the job. Building a compost heap is one of the most easy ways to begin to improve a garden’s top soil at little expense. All professional gardeners will tell you that a compost heap is the single most important thing that all gardeners of any experience can do to improve their top soil.

The benefit of a compost heap is that it will decay matter of organic origin much more quickly enabling the substance to release its nutrients and be ready for the gardener to mix it into their top soil. This additional nutrient and organic matter content is crucial to the performance of good top soil. It is essential for nutrients to be present in the top soil mix so that plants can take what they need to survive, some taking more than others. Organic matter helps improve the top soil by making its consistency suitable for water retention as well as providing adequate drainage. Heavy raining periods can wash nutrients out of the soil, so good organic matter can help prevent this.

The most important aspect to any compost is to make sure that only organic matter is put into it in the first place. Loads of details can be found on the Internet about compost making ingredients.
