Growing Orchids for Beginners

July 15th, 2011
Orchids at the Singapore Botanic Gardens

As an aspiring orchid gardener, your first decision is what type of orchid you should grow. Firstly, you should consider the weather in the region you live in and whether or not it is beneficial for indoor or outdoor orchid growth. That is one of the biggest initial decisions to make – growing your orchid inside or outside.

Choose healthy plants.
Make sure to purchase healthy orchid plants that are free from pests or diseases. The bulbs should all be around the same size with none significantly smaller than others. It is best to buy an orchid that has already bloomed or is blooming at the time of purchase. Always look for living roots. Plus, don’t buy from sellers who are not reputable even if the low prices are tempting. One infested plant can devastate an entire collection of orchids.

Grow similar orchids together
Growing orchids for beginners is easier when you select orchids that grow happily together. That means: do not put orchids which like the shade with orchids which like the sun. And, do not place orchids which like nighttime temperatures of 70 to 80 degrees with those who prefer cooler nighttime temperatures of 50 to 60 degrees. Grow orchids together only if they have similar needs.

Make plenty of space
Orchids come in all sizes. Make sure you always research how tall your orchid will become before buying it. Orchid plants may start off small and stay that way, while others can grow over two feet tall. A small orchid can spread out its flower stems to be over five feet long. If growing orchids inside, make sure that your house has enough room for your species to spread out.

Check humidity levels
Most warm orchids need pretty high humidity levels in order to thrive and flower. Many should be in the 60% to 80% range. If you live in a place where it gets very cold in the winters, you most likely will not be able to maintain such a high humidity level without building a greenhouse or some type of glass enclosure. Some of the cool orchids or terrestrials are not so demanding about moisture. These are better selections for beginners.

Water orchids well
The watering of orchids is one of the most critical aspects of orchid care. Most orchids do well with watering once a week. You should wait for the plant to dry out but don’t let it get totally dry in-between watering. The top should be dry to the touch and the pot should feel light. One of the biggest mistakes beginners make with orchids is over-watering. You want to water the plant until water runs out of the drainage holes. But make sure the orchid is well-drained and there is never any accumulation of water.

Air circulation is necessary
Orchids need to be able to have a lot of air circulation for superior growth. Unlike most plants, except for a few terrestrial varieties, orchids are not planted with their roots growing into the soil. Whatever media you use for planting–fir bark, sphagnum moss, peat moss or others, it is essential that the entire growing area has adequate ventilation. Inside, a ceiling fan on low is just right for proper air circulation. An orchid can deteriorate because of stale air.

Try liquid fertilizer
If you want your orchids to flower, which can be a tricky part of growing orchids for beginners, you are going to have to fertilize them. Gardeners disagree a lot about the best fertilizer for orchids. Everyone seems to have their own pet theory. The best way is to simply try a couple of different fertilizing options and see which works out the best. You can go all organic with your fertilizers, using compost from worm castings or fish emulsions, or you can use synthetic fertilizers, such as 10-10-10 with varying amounts of nutrients.

Do You Want to Install Wall Water Fountains?

June 8th, 2011

Many people invest money and effort into creating a more relaxing atmosphere at home. For those who have gardens, they create fountains and ponds. Even if you live in a condo unit, you can still install a wall water fountain in your living room. Why do people insist on having wall water fountains in their property? This is because having an element of nature indoors or in the garden can have a calming effect on a person. A person can relax just by gazing at the cascading water.

Wall water fountains are now so popular because people realize that these are inexpensive to install. If you’re working with a designer, just pick a spot for your fountain and the designer can work around that spot. Of course, the more frugal way of doing it is to do a DIY. You can do it yourself by purchasing a kit and following the installation instructions. Whether you’re letting the professionals install your fixtures, or you’re doing it yourself, here are some tips.

The Materials of Your Fountain

Wall water fountains need to stay with you for a long time. Some materials are more durable than others. You cannot go wrong with silicon and fiber glass. If there isn’t any choice, go for plastic materials. Wooden fountains may be a joy to look at but wood corrodes after some time. Wood can be a good breeding ground for molds so make sure you maintain it properly if you’re using it as a material for your fountain.

Water Supply

Clean flowing water looks better than murky water. Expect your water bill to go up a bit if you have a wall water fountain at home. You don’t want dirty water flowing down your wall fountain. Make sure your water source is strong. For you to stay frugal, you should install a mechanism that will help circulate the water until you change it.

Lighting

Lights can highlight the beauty of your fountains if positioned nicely. Correct positioning of lights will make the water cascading down your walls glow. This glowing water will be a welcome addition to any landscape especially at night. If you often have night time events at home, you definitely have to install wall water fountain lighting.

How To Clean Bricks

May 22nd, 2011
Pile of bricks.

Image via Wikipedia

Brick provides a lovely accent to any home or office. Like any interior surface, brick work needs to be cleaned regularly to look its best the rough finish of the brick and the cement grouting makes it easy for dust and dirt to adhere to the surface. While regular dusting is essential, sooner or later stains will develop which will need a little special attention to remove them. There are various ways of cleaning bricks and what follows are to of the least aggressive methods. If they do not work for you, rather than experiment with more extreme methods yourself and perhaps do more harm than good, it is preferable to get the help of a home cleaning agency.

Method 1:

Take a cake of dish soap (the grease and oil removing kind) and cut in half (the size will depend on the brick area to be cleaned). Place it in a bowl and add an equal quantity of ordinary table salt. Using just a little water mix the soap and salt into a thick paste. Using a clean rag spread the paste evenly over the brick surface. The thickness of the paste on the brick is not important as long as the entire surface is covered evenly.

Using a hard scrub brush, rub the paste into the brickwork and allow it to remain there for about 10 minutes before rinsing off with a clean cloth dipped in warm water. You should see a noticeable difference in the finish of the bricks.

But if this does not yield the results you want, you can try-

Method 2:

In a clean bucket mix warm (not hot) water and boric acid in the proportion of one tablespoon of the acid to one gallon of water. Put on rubber gloves and goggles you are going to be scrubbing and some of the mixture could spray back into your eyes. Take a hard scrub brush, dip it in the solution and vigorously scrub the brick surface. Allow the solution to rest on the bricks for a minute or two and then rinse it away with a rag dipped in warm water.

If this still does not give you the results you want, contact a professional office cleaning agency to do the job. Using strong chemicals on your own can be dangerous not only to you but may damage floors, walls and furniture. Do not try more aggressive cleaning methods unless you are sure of what you are doing.

Important Things Homeowners Should Understand About Gutters

March 31st, 2011
rain gutter

Image via Wikipedia

One of the best ways to protect the foundation of your home, prevent erosion of your yard and improve the looks of your home is through gutter Austin. Gutters added to the drip line of the roof can direct rainwater safely away from your home to the storm drain or other system where it is dispersed safely without damaging your home.

Adding a rain gutter to the front porch can prevent rain from running down the roof and dripping onto your head. That water flow is collected in the gutter trough and diverted through the downspout to be deposited safely in the yard or storm drain without causing soil erosion.

There are many problems that can occur when a home does not have a proper doors Austin or gutter system. The force of dripping water can eat away at the dirt that supports the foundation of the home leading to cracks. Moisture buildup under the eaves of the home can allow mold to begin to grow on the outside of the home and then spread to the inside leading to very costly repairs. In addition, your valuable landscaping may be damaged by the erosion from roof runoff water.

Seamless gutters are a much better alternative than the ones bought in sections from the home improvement store. Those preformed gutters must be pieced together. Seams are not always aesthetically pleasing and each one provides a potential for a leak in the gutter. Over time, plastic gutters can lose their flexibility due to UV radiation from the sun and start to crack and break, leaving an unsightly appearance on your home.

Seamless gutters are formed on site at your home. The materials are brought as a long roll of aluminum. This flat metal roll is directed through a machine that forms it into the gutters for your home. The gutter is formed to the exact length of the roof, without seams. It is then attached to the fascia boards or the ends of the rafters of your home to catch every drop of rain that falls and runs down the shingles.

Seamless gutters are also preferred because they are able to handle a larger amount of water than the cheap gutters that are often self installed. Most of the gutters found in the home improvement stores are four inch gutters. Some are as small as three inch. The seamless gutters are made in five to six inch sizes. Choosing the larger size gutter prevents dams that can cause gutters to allow water to overflow the gutter.

Seamless gutters are made with a baked enamel finish that is designed to last for the life of the gutter. They never need to be painted, but can be cleaned occasionally. Most of the time, cleaning can be accomplished using an ordinary garden hose with a spray attachment.

Gutter installation Austin cost is very small if compared to the price of reinforcing foundations or replacing landscaping or lawn that have been damaged by the water flow from a roof without gutters. Gutters make a great way to protect your investment in the home.

Water pump and duck pond, Woodford Green. The ...

Image via Wikipedia

Looking for something special to spruce up a flat area on your patio or outdoor living area ? You won’t find anything more aesthetically pleasing than water features softly bubbling away in a small corner .

These days there are many types of water features currently available in many different finishes . Yet frequently to find a water feature that fits perfectly is difficult . You might like to have an try yourself, why not ?. Pumps are readily available at any hardware , tubing at a local plumbing store and a pond at a specialty pond shop, some sort of feature to stick upright in the pond from a pottery retailer . You might even expect to save a few dollars. For sure , you can do it but there are issues to consider .

These are some of the problems you can come up against .

To start with , the item you are going to use as the center piece in the center of the pond should have a hole in the base large enough to fit the pipe you are using. In the case of a glazed pot you will need a particular drill bit probably a rotary percussion. You can’t just start drilling a large hole you’ll bust the pot, you must start at a smaller drill bit and work your way up .

Next you must buy the correct size pump. If the pump you purchase is too powerful the water will overshoot . Not powerful enough it won’t do the job. It is best to purchase a pump which has a capacity adjuster to weaken or speed up the water flow.

The pot/feature must seal adequately or the water will run out of the pond when the water feature is turned off.

A good feature of a water feature is to be able to maintain the pump without taking apart the whole unit .

How good will the unit look once it is all assembled? Will the water run the way you are hoping ? Experiment or find a similar feature before you commence.

So with a bit of vision, some of your time you’ll be dazing at that water feature thankful you had a unexciting little nook as it now is an item of beauty.

Water is damaging and that’s why it is important that you’re aware of how to detect leaks.

Here are some useful leak detection tips:

• Check all taps – be sure to take the time to inspect all areas of your home to see if there is any dripping. Even a slight drip can develop into something larger if not properly monitored. As well as checking the taps, always look underneath the sinks and see if there is any damp there, and if there is, you could have a problem.

• Are your valves closed? – this is a common error but by making sure the valves are closed you can be sure to minimise the risk of any leakage.

• Check how aged the pipes are – our homes today are filled with multiple appliances but if you keep on top of the pipes and make sure they are still in good condition then this will help to prevent any leaks. Leak detection starts with the most basic of homeowner checks.

Ultimately, if you think there be an area of your home that is leaking, the best tip is to do the cloth test – take a dry cloth and place it on that area and leave it for 48 hours… if you return and it is wet then you know that you have a problem. Don’t worry if you do find some leaking – a little bit of leaking can be quickly resolved by a plumber.

General Hydroponic Gardening Advantages

Image via Wikipedia

What is general hydroponics gardening? Don’t you love gardening and want luscious plants but hate obtaining dirty and creating a large mess with soil? In that case then this general hydroponics system could be your best solution.

General hydroponics gardening systems are setups that are used to cultivate plants in water and nutrient solutions with out using soil. You see, this isn’t just gardening folks, this really is meaningful science.

Just what are General Hydroponics systems?

Growing plants traditionally demands dirt, light and nutrients, hard work and something for all those pesky weeds.

Hydro systems fall into the category of soil less culture, and may be confusing because some gardening hydroponics systems are completely soil less, even though numerous which are regarded as soil less still use composted supplies.

Crop yield is a lot higher with this water-based growing platform and you can find many other advantages as well. You can find two basic techniques which are utilized for hydroponic farming that requires different kinds of equipment plus some space to operate in.

The nutrient solutions are packed with scientific jargon, but can easily be translated for a beginner. As soon as you get these things down, general hydroponics systems are amazing and produce excellent crops.

Where you should start? A general hydroponics system holds the water which is far better to develop in because then it is possible to get rid of unwanted chemicals that plants produce after they take what nutrients they want from your soil.

This takes nutrient control out of the hands of the grower. You can find two different kinds of hydroponic systems which are understood to be cultures, because they break down into numerous different approaches within these two fundamental groups.

There’s the medium culture, which gives the roots “somewhere to go” and still provides the advantages of root aeration and discarded nutrient drain. In the medium culture, the distinct approaches are named for whatever the plants are grown in.

The answer culture offers a continuing flow of nutrients towards the roots of the plants as well as breaks down into several diverse approaches based on how they are irrigated.

If you are making your own general hydroponics system, you’ll need proper containers for both systems. These contain buckets or other grow containers, as well as your medium for growth if you are utilizing that method.

If you’re utilizing a answer culture, you’ll need black plastic to prevent algae from growing in the solution containers, and etc. proper to the culture you choose.

For novices, there are starter kits which will include everything that you will need as well as the nutrient solution which is appropriate for the plants.

Crop yield is a large reasons why some growers prefer to use a hydro system instead of soil.Due to the fact the grower has complete control on the quantity of nutrients which the plant receives, chances are they’ll can yield twice as significantly as a container plant and even tweak the nutrients to match whatever plant they are trying to grow.

In addition, pests are less difficult in order to get rid of simply because the systems are quite mobile as well as the water is aerated frequently. There is nonetheless, still risk for illness and pathogenic attacks, as all plants are.

General Hydroponics farming

General hydroponic farming is a small “greener” too; there’s no nutrition run off released into our already fragile environment.

They are a few from the advantages of water-based systems, and when you observe just how much it is possible to grow with general hydroponics farming, you may never need your gardening gloves and spade once more.

Tips for Growing with Greenhouse Hydroponics Equipment

February 11th, 2011
Tomato

Image via Wikipedia

If you’re thinking of beginning a hydroponic garden, you may want to look into building a greenhouse. Greenhouse hydroponic growing combines the best factors of hydroponic growing without the need to run electrical lights for most of the day, resulting in a much lower electrical bill – and building a greenhouse can be a fun family project!

Why grow with hydroponic greenhouses?

  • Greenhouses give you the controlled environment that hydroponic growers love while allowing your plants to get most of their energy from the sun.
  • With less need to be concerned about environmental factors that threaten soil-grown plants such as pests, unwanted weeds, fungal infections, and acid/alkaline imbalances in the soil, a greenhouse gardener finds more joy in gardening, and in enjoying the fruits of his labor!
  • Hydroponically grown vegetables have been shown to be higher in vitamins than their soil counterparts. Greenhouse hydroponic growing allows you to have a healthy supply of food for you and your family year-round.

There are a few things to think about while planning the construction of your greenhouse.

If you live in a region that has sun year-round, even in winter, it is very likely that you will be able to grow crops hydroponically in all seasons without the use of electric lighting.

  • However, a greenhouse that is warm enough to grow crops hydroponically in the winter might end up incinerating them all come summer! Ventilation can help alleviate overheating concerns in the summer, allowing you to grow vegetables such as lettuce hydroponically without worrying about it wilting.

You may also consider movable sun-shades to reduce the amount of light entering the greenhouse in the summer to reduce the chances of over exposing your vegetables to the sun, which can cause your vegetables to grow too fast and show signs of leaf-tip burning.

  • The ability to manage all aspects of lighting is one reason why hydroponic greenhouse growing is so easy and popular.

Eliminating the soil and growing your plants hydroponically allows you to grow them with less water, which saves on costs.

  • When you water plants in the soil, the water disperses over a large area, so your plants end up requiring more water and nutrients to grow well.
  • Some water you use in a soil-based growing operation won’t even touch the roots at all, and instead will sit in the soil until it eventually evaporates.
  • In a hydroponic setup, your water is used much more efficiently since there is no soil for the water to disperse in.

Instead, the roots of your plants are exposed directly to the water and nutrients, eliminating the waste found in soil-grown plants.

  • Many hydroponic setups allow you to recycle nutrients and water as well, leading to greater efficiency and savings.
  • It is also much easier to control the pH levels of your growing media in a greenhouse, as you do not have to deal with rainwater or other environmental factors which can change the alkalinity of the soil against your wishes.

    Rose Gardening 101

    Image via Wikipedia

    Rose Gardening Tips

Roses have gotten a bad wrap over the years for being difficult to grow and maintain your flower  garden. If you are thinking of rose gardening don’t let this rumor stop you.  While rose gardening can  prove to be challenging, when you get used to it, it really isn’t that bad.

When you first start flower gardening, you will have to choose what type of rose you wish to plant, and  no, I’m not talking about the color.  You will have to choose between bare-root, pre-packaged, and  container-grown roses.  Bare-root roses are sold in the winter and early spring.  They should be  planted as soon as frosts are over and the ground is warm and workable.  Pre-packaged roses are  bare-root plants which are sold in a bad or box with something around the roots to retain moisture,  like sawdust.  Container-grown roses are grown; you guessed it, in containers.  They will be either  budding or already in bloom when they become available in the early spring.

Planting in rose gardening is not that much different than any other type of plant.  The most  important thing, as always, is good, healthy soil and a prime planting area.  It doesn’t matter  whether your roses are bare-root or container-grown, the planting methods are the same as any other  shrub.  Make sure the spot you choose has good drainage, gets plenty of sunlight, and will not  overcrowd your roses.  Before planting, any dead leaves and thin or decayed shoots need to be cut off.   Any damaged or very long roots also need to be trimmed.  Soak bare-root roses in water about 10-12  hours to restore moisture in the roots before planting and water the soil before planting as well.   Make certain the hole you have dug is large enough for the root growth of the rose.  Also it is a good  idea to use compost or mulch.  After all, roses like extra nutrients just like any other plant.

Roses need the same things as other plants; they are just a bit needier.  One of the most important  things to remember in rose gardening is that roses are heavy feeders and will need several fertilizer  applications.  Fertilizing should be started in early spring and discontinued in early fall.  Make  sure not to over-fertilize (fertilize should come with instructions) and water after each feeding.   Roses require large amounts of water; a thorough watering twice a week should be enough.

Pruning is an essential part to flower gardening.  It increases blooms and encourages healthy plant  growth.  Different varieties of roses have different instructions for pruning, so you might want to read up on your rose types and see what’s suggested.

The most important thing to remember in flowers gardening is to water, water, and water some more.  One other thing  about rose gardening is the amount of fertilizer and nutrients you will need to use, and also the pruning  that needs to be done to keep your roses under control and healthy.  Even though rose gardening takes  a little more time and roses are more work, they are one of the most unique and beautiful plants, and  definitely worth the extra work.
